Description:

Tunisians are expected to go to the polls to elect a new president on Oct. 7, 2024, in seven weeks from today. However, the current president has arrested and/or sentenced over 50 of the top politicians and political party leaders are in jail, and the election commission has rejected 14 out of 17 candidates who declared their intention to run and submitted hundreds of documents and over 10,000 recommendations. The Ministry of Interior has so far refused to give most of the declared candidates their legal record document (B3) which is one of the documents required by the new law (enacted 3 months ago by the ISIE). The media continues to be muzzled after the arrests of prominent journalists and hundreds of bloggers. Under these conditions, should/will the opponents of Kais Saied and the major opposition parties participate in what appears to be sham elections, or should they boycott them?

Moderator: Radwan A. Masmoudi, Founder and President of the Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy (CSID).

The Panelists will speak in Arabic, with simultaneous interpretation into English.
